This amount is supposed to meet the requirements of nearly all healthy men and women (97.5%) aged 19 year and older, but does not consider additional requirements when exercising. These are caused by oxidation of protein during exercise, repair of damaged muscle tissue and lean muscle growth. Other factors determining the amount of protein needed by athletes are protein quality, total energy input and output, carbohydrate intake, type and intensity of exercise, time of protein intake.
